MARQUETTE — The Marquette City Fire Department responded to a structure fire on Third Street Friday evening in an apartment above the Zero Degrees Art Gallery.

Capt. Jeff Green said the 911 call came in just after 7 p.m. when a renter noticed smoke in a neighboring apartment at 525 N. Third St.

Parts of the 500 and 600 blocks of North Third Street and Ohio Street were closed to traffic during the incident.

Green said the fire was contained to the kitchen area, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation. Preliminarily, he added, it appears most likely to have been something on the stovetop.

Green said there was moderate damage to that apartment in the kitchen area, smoke damage throughout the apartment, minor damage in the adjoining apartment and some water damage on the first floor in the art gallery.

The renter of the apartment was not home, but the resident’s dog was removed safely.

“Once we knocked down the fire, then we started evacuating the building as far as smoke goes,” Green said. “We did a primary search while we were initiating attack. We did find one dog. We were able to get the dog out safely.”

Building owner Carrie Irish said she rents three apartments on the upper floor of the building; the fire took place in apartment three.

Also responding to the scene was the Marquette City Police Department and UP Health System – Marquette EMS.
