TRICKS OF THE TRADE

DIY Network star and skilled trades advocate Jason Cameron helps Republic Michigamme Schools student Heidi Nurmela, right, make a folding table out of cedar in the wood shop. Gabe Dupont, left, works alongside Cameron. Cameron, a 1988 RMS graduate, said he wants let students know that the skilled trades are not only an option in their future career, but learning them can create a foundation for many life experiences. “Two or three months ago, the school reached out to me and wondered if I would be able to help in any way bring back the shop class, that I think for a while they had shut down,” Cameron said. “I jumped at the chance. The more of a spotlight we can put on this, the better. I have been involved in the skilled trades my whole life, and it’s something I advocate for.” Cameron is also the keynote commencement speaker at the school’s graduation ceremony today.
