Western Marquette County Health Foundation opens spring grant cycle

ISHPEMING — The Western Marquette County Health Foundation is encouraging community organizations to apply for funds from its spring grant cycle before the deadline of April 1.

The WMCHF provides grants to nonprofit agencies with a focus on funding projects that seek to enhance health and wellness in the cities of Ishpeming and Negaunee and nine townships consisting of Ishpeming, Negaunee, Ely, Republic, Michigamme, Tilden, Champion, Humboldt and Richmond. The foundation also will consider grants for programs that benefit the population of Marquette County and the Upper Peninsula.

According to WMCHF grant-making policy, grant awards are determined based on individual proposals, impact on the community and sustainability.

Grant size varies based on request, however the average grant size is expected to range from $1,000 to $10,000.

Multiyear grants will be accepted, based on board approval of progress reports.

The foundation is dedicated to providing funding for health and wellness solutions for the communities within Western Marquette County, including but not limited to: chronic disease education, including diabetes, asthma, arthritis, cancer, heart disease; mental health and social and emotional support; prenatal health; health and wellness; obesity; and the uninsured or underinsured, primarily children.

According to the foundation, in the last fiscal year, these grants have provided necessary support for a number of organizations, including but not limited to the Ishpeming, Negaunee, NICE and Republic-Michigamme School District; diabetes education and awareness for the Upper Peninsula Diabetes Outreach Network; Big Brothers Big Sisters of Marquette and Alger Counties to promote GirlPower West to young women; Teaching Family Homes; Range Mountain Bike Club-RAMBA; and Do it for Daniel.
