Kivela to serve House Dems as assistant whip

LANSING — State Rep. John Kivela, D-Marquette, said he is proud to join his four Democratic colleagues as an assistant whip for the Democratic Caucus during the 2017-18 legislative session.

Kivela was chosen for the position by recently named House Democratic Caucus Whip, state Rep. Jeremy Moss, D-Southfield, according to a press release from Katie Carey, the communications director/press secretary of House Democratic Leader Sam Singh and the House Democratic Caucus.

“It is a true honor to be part of the team that will fight to support working families, make education affordable, and bring transparency to state government,” Kivela said in the release. “I look forward to working with my colleagues to help create a stronger state for our residents living in both the Upper and Lower Peninsula of Michigan.”

Kivela, serving his third term for the 109th House District, worked in the automotive field, first in his family’s auto repair and distributor business, then as the general manager of his local used car dealership. He served as mayor of Marquette from 2008 to 2012. He was first elected to the Marquette City Commission in 2006.

“I feel very fortunate to have a third term member in Rep. Kivela as a member of my team,” said Moss. “As he served as an assistant whip during the 2015-2016 session, he brings a vast amount of experience to this leadership position within our caucus.”
