Missing boater’s body recovered from Little Bay de Noc

ESCANABA – The search for the missing boater who jumped into the water in Little Bay de Noc Saturday in an attempt to rescue a friend has come to an end.

The body of Tom Petruszak was recovered from the water shortly after noon today by the Delta County Sheriff’s Office Marine Division, according to a press release.

Police said Petruszak and two other men from Illinois were fishing when the incident occurred. He allegedly jumped in the water to save a friend that had lost his balance and fell off of the boat after it was struck by a large wave.

A passerby was able to rescue the subject who fell overboard but was unable to locate Petruszak. None of the individuals in the boat were wearing lifejackets.

A search of the water and lake bottom was conducted in the days following the incident by the sheriff’s office marine division and dive team, Michigan State Police Marine Services and Delta County Search and Rescue.

The sheriff’s office was assisted with the recovery today by the Michigan State Police post in Manistique, MSP cadaver detection canine out of Lansing and Delta Force PI with aerial use of their drone, according to the release.

The deceased man’s age and residency were not disclosed in the release.
