Smolens hold ‘Out’ book release

MARQUETTE — The Peter White Public Library invites patrons to award-winning author John Smolens release of his new book “Out,” the sequel to “Cold,” at 7 p.m. Monday in the Peter White Public Library’s Community Room.

Beginning where “Cold” ends, “Out” finds DelMaki recovering from surgery in his house deep in the woods of the Upper Peninsula.

Still haunted by his wife’s death, he finds he doesn’t have the solitude to mourn as a blizzard sends numerous refugees his way. First there is the pregnant physical therapist, later joined by her two lovers and finally a Finnish woman. When a power outage, fallen tree, and fire make it impossible to stay in his house, they set off through the woods, where once again human nature fights with nature for survival.

John Smolens, professor emeritus of English at Northern Michigan University where he received the Distinguished Faculty Award in 2006, is the author of numerous books including “The Schoolmaster’s Daughter,” “The Anarchist,” and “Fire Point.”

His writings also have been published in various magazines and newspapers including Writer’s Market, The Los Angeles Times, and The Boston Globe. In 2010, he received the Michigan Author of the Year Award from the Michigan Library Association.

After the presentation, there will be the opportunity for book sales and signings with Snowbound Books. For more information, visit www.pwpl.info or call 226-4318.
