Dan Fountain to offer presentation

MARQUETTE — Marquette Maritime Museum’s Maritime History on Tap series presents Dan Fountain’s “Michigan Gold & Silver: The Lake Superior Connection.”

Tales of 19th Century pioneer explorers looking for silver and gold in the wilds of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Learn about the prospectors, investors, Great Lakes captains, inventors and swindlers who were part of this colorful era. The event is at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Ore Dock Brewing Company. $5 suggested donation at the door.

Meet the Physician Wednesday

MARQUETTE — At noon Wednesday, Dr. Ann Silverman will present Fatty Liver Disease: The Silent Epidemic in this month’s Meet the Physician session in the Peter White Public Library’s Shiras Room on the upper level.

Fatty liver disease is very common in middle-aged Americans, with 100,000,000 people having it. Major risk factors include obesity and type 2 diabetes as well as excessive alcohol consumption. Generally benign, it can lead to liver fibrosis (20,000,000 Americans) and cirrhosis of the liver (5,000,000 Americans.)

Dr. Ann Silverman works in the field of gastroenterology and digestive health. She received her medical degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York, and did her internship/residency at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Boston, MA. She went to John Hopkins University School of Medicine for her fellowship, and is board certified in gastroenterology and internal medicine.

This monthly lunch and learn session is sponsored by the U.P. Health System of Marquette and the Peter White Public Library. Bring a sack lunch as well as any questions for the doctor. Poe’s birthday to be celebrated

MARQUETTE — Everyone is invited to celebrate Edgar Allan Poe’s 210th birthday at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Peter White Public Library’s Community Room on the lower level.

This special concert honoring the life and work of Edgar Allan Poe will be hosted by Christopher Scott Leith as Poe. Not only will he introduce the various performances, but he will also read “The Raven.” Christopher is an actor and development director of the Shakespeare Company.

Chet Defonso, a Northern Michigan University history professor, and Becca McAllister, a Northern Michigan University student and social worker, will read some of Poe’s shorter lyrical poems,

Dan Truckey, director of the Beaumier Heritage U.P. Center and a musician with over 30 years experience performing and composing music, Dylan Trost, a local musician and songwriter of The God Eaters and Stan Berry, and Ian Crane, a Northern Michigan University graduate in music and English as well as musician/songwriter, will sing original songs based on Poe’s verse.

Finally, Russell Thorburn, poet laureate emeritus and author of “Somewhere We’ll Leave the World” (Wayne State University Press 2017) will perform his piano compositions for the Poe recitations.

Spaghetti dinner held Thursday

ISHPEMING — A spaghetti dinner is planned from 5-7 p.m. Thursday at the American Legion Post 114 in Greenwood Location.

The event is being put on by the Ladies Auxiliary. The cost is adults $8 and kids $5.

Spaghetti dinner fundraiser held

NEGAUNEE — From 5-8 p.m. Friday, the Negaunee High School Hockey Team will be hosting a spaghetti dinner fundraiser at the Negaunee Elks Club, 107 N. Pioneer Ave.

Tickets are $5 per person, and includes spaghetti, garlic bread, a drink, and dessert. There will be raffle baskets, door prizes, and silent auctions.

Tickets are available at the door, or from any Negaunee High School hockey player.

VFW Negaunee to hold open house

NEGAUNEE — VFW Post 3165, 208 Gold St., Negaunee, will have an open house Friday and Saturday during the town’s Heikki Lunta Celebration.

On Friday, the post will be open from 3 p.m. to midnight. From 3-5 p.m., there will be Country Line Dancing and from 6 p.m.-midnight there will be Video Jukebox. Hot beverages and drink specials will be featured throughout the open house

Then on Saturday, the post will be open from 1 p.m.-midnight. From 4:30-7 p.m. Chili Dinner Fundraiser. From 6 p.m.-midnight tjhere will be Video Jukebox. Hot beverages and drink specials will be featured throughout the open house.
