NWS monitoring sites added

NEGAUNEE — The National Weather Service-Marquette station, based in Negaunee Township, has added four new river monitoring sites to its Advanced Hydrologic Prediction Service page.

That page is at https://water.weather.gov/ ahps2/index.php?wfo=mqt.

These gauges are owned and operated by the United States Geological Survey, with the data shared with the NWS.

At this time, these sites are observations only and forecasts will not be provided. They also do not have established flood categories, but the NWS wants to hear from people who live near these or any waterways and see any flooding of infrastructure.

NWS may be contacted via social media, such as Facebook or Twitter, or at 906-475-5212. Press 0 to speak with a forecaster.

The following new sites are now available: DRMM4 Dead River near Marquette, WBMM4 Whetstone Brook at Altamont Street at Marquette, MRMM4 Miners River near Munising and FRLM4 Falls River near L’Anse.

The workshop, offered through the DNR’s Becoming an Outdoors-Woman program, is scheduled for the weekend of Jan. 25-27. The outing is for women who have some previous experience and would like to expand on their skills and abilities.

Throughout the weekend, participants will have opportunities to ice fish, cross-country ski and snowshoe, BOW coordinator Michelle Zellar said.

Participants should bring ice-fishing gear, snowshoes, cross-country skis, a headlamp and outdoor gear appropriate for winter weather. There is a downhill ski resort, so attendees also may want to bring downhill skis.

Workshop attendees who would like to fish will need to bring a fishing license or purchase one prior to arrival. The cost is $26 for an annual license, or $10 for a 24-hour license.

Participants will meet at the Kaug Wudjoo Lodge on Jan. 25 afternoon/evening for two nights of lodging. The lodge is located near the east entry to the park and Union Bay. Instructors will be on site beginning at 2 p.m. Dinner will be provided by the instructors Friday evening. The lodge has a full kitchen, allowing participants to prepare meals on site for the remainder of the event.

Participants must be 18 or older. Enrollment is limited to 10. The deadline for registration is Jan. 7. Class information and registration materials are available online at michigan.gov/bow.
