Volunteer opportunities

Volunteer opportunities available for willing people of all ages in Marquette County. Persons 55 or older can learn about these and other possibilities in their community by contacting Julie Shaw at 315-2607 at the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program. Younger potential volunteers should contact the agencies directly.

The New Free Store

The New Free Store, 1420 M-28 East, Marquette, needs volunteers to sort donations, display donations, repackage some items, serve light refreshments and help shoppers find what they need. This is a non-profit organization serving mainly low income and homeless families. It has no income guidelines so anyone in need of help can go to the store and shop for free. The New Free Store gives away good quality used clothing, linens, personal hygiene items and cleaning supplies. RSVP:

New opportunity! What is a guardian and what do they do? If you might be interested in learning more about what it means to become a guardian, please call Julie at 315-2607. Marquette County is in great need of guardians. If we have enough interest, we will provide a training on what it involves and the paperwork that needs to be completed. Call today!

RSVP Friendly Visitor

Please call Julie at 315-2607 if you would be interested in being a friendly visitor. This would be in the Palmer community.This opportunity would allow a caregiver some time to participate in activities outside of the home.

RSVP’s TRIAD group is looking for new members to be a part of seniors and law enforcement working together to improve the quality of life for seniors in Marquette County. We work on improving the safety and well-being of seniors by educating them and having resources available to reduce the criminal victimization and enhance the delivery of law enforcement services to older citizens in Marquette County. We meet on the first Wednesday of every month at 1 p.m. Call Julie at 315-2607 to learn more and to see if this is something that would be a good fit for YOU!

The Life Tracker Program is in need of volunteers who would be willing to visit individuals that use the Life Tracker system. This is a bi-monthly visit that requires a battery change in the unit. Individuals can range from seniors experiencing memory loss to any age individuals diagnosed with autism. Training is provided. Your time is appreciated. Mile reimbursement for your travel. Non-Emergency Medical Transporters

We are in need of persons who are interested in transporting our senior friends to non-emergency medical appointments. Mileage reimbursement is offered. We especially need transporters from the Big Bay/Marquette and Ishpeming/Republic/Michigamme communities. Call Julie at 315-2607 if interested.

Room at the Inn Warming Center

Volunteers are needed to prepare and serve breakfast and/or lunch to the homeless/needy. The Warming Center is located at 447 W. Washington St., Marquette. Breakfast shift is 7:30-10 a.m. Lunch shift is 10 a.m.- 12:30 p.m. Meals are served seven days per week. Great need for volunteers on Saturdays. Volunteers are welcome to schedule a trial visit to determine if this experience is something they would like. Most people find this a rewarding experience. Volunteers should be reliable and compassionate. For additional information or to schedule a visit, contact Ryan at 225-1521. He is available mornings Monday-Friday.

Community Action Alger Marquette

CAAM is currently looking for volunteers at the Forsyth Township Senior Center on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays to help with the senior lunches. CAAM is also in need of volunteers for their senior lunches at Cherry Creek Village in Harvey Wednesdays. Please consider volunteering one or more days per month for this rewarding experience. Cancer Care of Marquette County

is currently looking for a public relations volunteer. Person would be responsible to promote our one or two fundraisers throughout the year via public service announcements and free ads offered by various media outlets. Public appearances not necessarily a responsibility but hopefully would develop over time if the candidate is comfortable. Other opportunities are available to assist our organization if desired. The American Cancer Resource Center

Located in Suite 110 at the Peninsula Medical Center in Marquette is in need of volunteers. This is a volunteer group. The volunteers help cancer patients newly diagnosed, and undergoing treatment, both oncology and radiation. The center offers a wide source of literature and “free” health managers (with their specific type of cancer.) Anyone who has time to volunteer is asked to call Claire at 225-3507 on Tuesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Leave a message if no one answers.

Habitat for Humanity

Marquette County Habitat for Humanity is seeking volunteers to help build and repair homes in Marquette County. No experience necessary, just a willing spirit. Volunteers can register online at www.mqthabitat.org or call 906-228-3578.

REST

New opportunity: Respite Education and Support Tools, is a unique, interactive training program, where you will receive the education and tools needed to be confident and successful in providing respite care to adults and children. This is a training opportunity free of charge for both paid and informal/volunteer caregivers. It will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 23 and Wednesday, Oct. 24 from 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Location Negaunee Service Center (also known as Marquette County Health Department.) UPAWS

Do you knit or are you crafty? Please consider volunteering for the “Snuggles Project” for the Upper Peninsula Animal Welfare Shelter homeless cats and kittens. “Snuggle Blankets” make their stay at the shelter much cozier and then the blanket can go with them to their new home.

The Snuggles Project encourages donations of yarn and support of volunteers to knit small snuggle blankets for the cats, kittens and small dogs at UPAWS.

Girl Scouts

Girl Scouting depends on volunteer leaders who offer their time and talent to give girls K-12 the opportunities this program offers. Lake Superior Life Care and Hospice

Lake Superior Hospice, an independent non-profit organization, invites people to join its award-winning group of devoted and dependable volunteers. As a volunteer for Lake Superior Hospice, a person is a member of a dedicated team of professionals that provides quality care to patients and their families, with care, compassion and commitment. By showing up and being fully present to others, volunteers make the community a better place to live. LSH strives to match a volunteer’s personal interests, talents and comfort level with the needs of the organization, its patients, families, and community. LSH currently has a need for volunteers to provide friendly visits, caregiver support, veteran-to-veteran activities, spiritual support, and office assistance. Care Clinics of Marquette and Sawyer

The Care Clinic offers pregnancy help and educational resources for families. We are currently in need of receptionists and male and female mentors for both facilities. Hourly times can be as short as two hours up to six hours in a day — whatever fits with your schedule. We provide training and are a faith-based organization that strongly cares for each individual who walks through our doors. You will feel love here and enjoy your time giving to the organization. UP Home Health and Hospice

It is the little things we do that make the biggest impact in the lives of others. As a volunteer with U.P. Home Health & Hospice, a person will be able to leave lasting impressions on hospice patients, their family and caregivers. Build skills or share talents with hospice patients in a variety of volunteer opportunities and the life changed just may be the volunteers. U.P. Home Health & Hospice continues to exceed standards with chart-topping clinical quality reports while growing its volunteer team. Hospice volunteers are a special group of individuals who provide service, companionship and friendship to patients through a variety of activities, and respite to caregivers. Activities with patients may include helping with life reviews, memoirs, reading or listening to music together, preparing light meals, running errands, veteran-to-veteran interaction, writing letters or making bereavement phone calls. Volunteers visit patients in private homes and residential care facilities. UPHHH provides free training, flexibility, ongoing support and education to ensure all volunteers are comfortable working directly with patients and their loved ones and it is essential for the volunteer to understand that they are part of the Hospice Team.
