‘Love, Simon’ to be screened

MARQUETTE — The Peter White Public Library invites film fans to watch “Love, Simon” at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the library’s Heritage Room.

Bring dinner to enjoy the movie in a dinner theater setting with other movie lovers.

Like all young people, 17-year-old Simon Spier is looking for love, only there’s a problem — his friends and family don’t know that he is gay. When he develops an on-line romantic connection with Blue, he must figure out who Blue really is and come to terms with his own identity. Starring Nick Robinson, Jennifer Garner and Josh Duhamel, this 2018 comedic drama is rated R and runs 110 minutes. Nick Robinson won the Choice Movie Breakout Star from the 2018 Teen Choice Awards.

Ethnic Folk Dance event Tuesday

MARQUETTE — The Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center and Northern Michigan University International Dancers will hold a free Ethnic Folk Dance at 7 p.m. Tuesday at DanceZone.

The event will feature ethnic dances from various groups represented in the Upper Peninsula, including French, Italian, Slovenian, Finnish, Swedish, Irish and more. Music will be performed by the Copper Country’s Thimbleberry Band. The dance is being held in conjunction with the current Beaumier Center exhibition, “The Immigration Experience.”

Marge Sklar, DanceZone instructor and coach of the NMU International Dancers, will lead the lessons. The NMU International Dancers is a group of NMU students, alumni, faculty and Marquette area residents who enjoy learning about different cultures through music and dance. The group is open to dancers of all ages.

Fall semester job fair to be held

MARQUETTE — Northern Michigan University students and alumni will have the opportunity to meet and talk with employers about job opportunities at the 51st annual Fall Semester Job Fair, hosted by NMU Career Services.

The fair will be held from 1-4 p.m. Tuesday in the University Center.

There is no cost for students to attend the job fair, but they are encouraged to bring their NMU ID for check-in. Employers will get to share information with students in addition to recruiting for full-time or part-time positions, internships and summer staff. Listed below are the registration fees for employers looking to participate in the 2018-2019 job fairs:

For-profit organizations: $100 (includes a table, chairs and lunch for two recruiters; additional recruiters will cost $15 each)

Non-profit organizations: $25 (includes a table, chairs and lunch for two recruiters; additional recruiters will cost $15 each)

Employers must register for this event by logging in to the Handshake app on the Cat Career Tracks website.

Students and alumni who plan to attend the event are encouraged to register beforehand via Cat Career Tracks-Handshake and to bring an ID to check in at the job fair in order to be placed into a drawing for a chance to win a prize. Ten winners will be selected and notified a day after the fair.

Meditation classes held at NMU

MARQUETTE — The Gourdian Society, a Northern Michigan University student organization, is hosting meditation classes at 5 p.m. Tuesdays at the Whitman Hall Commons. Sessions are free and open to the public. The group plans to meet every Tuesday, except over NMU breaks.

The Gourdian Society’s purpose is to teach the benefits and practice of meditation through the use of outside resources and materials. It also establishes discussion-based learning, examples and practice during meetings.

Artist Collective reception Tuesday

MARQUETTE — The reception for Travel Marquette Exhibit of work from the Marquette Artist Collective members will be from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Travel Marquette office at 117 W. Washington St.

PATH workshop to return in Gwinn

MARQUETTE — The Diabetes PATH — Personal Action Towards Health — workshop is returning to Gwinn beginning on Wednesday.

The workshop helps people living with daily challenges of diabetes, learn skills and tools needed to improve their health and manage their symptoms. Subjects covered include: symptoms of diabetes, stress, managing fatigue and emotional problems, exercise, healthy eating, medications, and working with health care providers.

The six-week class will meet on Wednesdays from 9-11:30 a.m. beginning on Oct. 17. It takes place at the “Victory Lutheran Church.” Pre registration is required, family and caregivers are welcome. There is no cost to attend.
