Fall fest at Fortune Lake camp

CRYSTAL FALLS — Fortune Lake Lutheran Camp will celebrate the season and the talents of area quilters and crafters Saturday at its Fall Fest. All are welcome.

Festivities begin at 10 a.m. ET with a hearty buffet brunch served in the camp dining hall, a country market of home-baked breads and pies, and quilt viewing in the chapel/auditorium.

The Quilt and Artwork Auction begins at noon ET with Pastor Corrine Parson of Iron Mountain serving as auctioneer. Among the auction items are 80 juried quilts of various sizes, wall hangings, table runners, and hand-loomed rugs. A variety of other handcrafted items, including autumn and Christmas decorations, may be purchased separately or won through a “draffle” format.

A group of dedicated quilters, fondly called “Sisters of the Cloth,” meet at Fortune Lake Camp throughout the year to work on projects for the auction. Individual artists and quilting groups from across the U.P. and northeast Wisconsin also contribute their creations.

This 22nd annual fundraiser benefits Fortune Lake Lutheran Camp, a camping and retreat facility owned by the 82 congregations of the Northern Great Lakes Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and several other Lutheran churches.

Located three miles west of Crystal Falls along U.S. 2, Fortune Lake Lutheran Camp has been welcoming people of all faiths and all ages for 88 years.

Service dog group open house set

ESCANABA — For decades, the Upper Peninsula had no resources for people with disabilities that needed the help of an assistance dog. Businesses also had no one to turn to with questions regarding unruly dogs entering their stores.

That just changed. A new nonprofit organization, Yooper Service Dogs, just became the only U.P.-based resource for assistance animals. YSD is hosting an all day event for people with all kinds of disabilities that are considering a dog to assist them. Business owners, the media, and members of the public are welcome to attend.

This event will feature speakers from Paws With A Cause, SuperiorLand Pet Partners, Leader Dogs for the Blind, Yooper Service Dogs , and the Superior Alliance for Independent Living. YSD will also be leading a short class on the difference between service, emotional support, skilled companions, and therapy animals; and a class on how to navigate service animal law. YSD’s service dog trainer will also be on hand to answer questions from people training service animals.

This event will be from 9a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6 at Bay College Escanaba (Joseph Heirman University Center, Room 952). For more info on the event: https://www.facebook.com/events/1886013058111288/
