Book release held Wednesday
MARQUETTE — The Peter White Public Library invites the public to the book release of “Blossoms in the Dark of Winter” by Christine Saari. The event will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the library’s Shiras Room.
Saari is a writer and visual artist. She grew up on an Austrian mountain farm and immigrated to the United States in 1964. She has been a Marquette resident since 1971. Saari is a member of the Marquette Poets Circle, the Marquette Artist Collective and WOW Art Studio.
“Blossoms in the Dark of Winter” is a poetic memoir, lyrically describing Saari’s grandmother, mother, and the farm where she grew up. It is her second memoir. Her first, in prose, was “Love and War at Stag Farm” published in 2011. Other poems by Saari have been published in Maiden Voyage, Water Music and Silver Birch Press.

Once Upon a Crime book club meets
MARQUETTE — On Wednesday, Once Upon a Crime, the book group for mystery lovers will start the new season’s theme, “The Book was better?” by reading The Thirty-nine Steps by John Buchan and watching the movie before the meeting to answer the question– was the book better?
On the eve of World War I, an inexplicable murder drives the innocent Richard Hannay, on the run from a manhunt that never seems to end, to hide in remote Scottish moorland. Disguise and deception are his only weapons, as he struggles to decode the clues left by the murdered man to prevent the theft of naval secrets by an unfriendly foreign power.

Music in the Alley on Wednesday
MUNISING — Music in the Alley After Hours, hosted by the Alger County Chamber of Commerce, in downtown Munising has been rescheduled to 4-7 p.m. Wednesday.
Light appetizers and beverages will be available, as will live music by Patrick Booth. The event will take place near M-28 between Maple Street and Elm Avenue.

MARQUETTE — All former Woolworth employees are invited to meet for lunch at noon Wednesday at Jeffrey’s Restaurant in Marquette.
Events to be open for students
MARQUETTE — Parents and teachers of Marquette students taking private music lessons are notified of two upcoming events in the 2018 Marquette Bach Music Festival.
Students in at least sixth grade who take private music lessons will be eligible to attend Thursday’s Bach concert at Kaufman Auditorium. The concert is offered to all students enrolled in music programs at Bothwell and Marquette Senior High School.
This notification extends eligibility to those taking private lessons who are not enrolled in a music program at their school. Parents should notify their school principal of their children who take private lessons.
Students who take private music lessons are invited to perform music by J.S.Bach at a recital to be given Saturday, Nov. 17 at Peter White Public Library (location subject to PWPL construction progress). This advance notification is given to allow teachers to prepare participating students in a work by Bach.
Teachers entering students must give instrument, name and work to Nancy Railey (226-9617, firstname.lastname@example.org) by Oct. 1.
Legion Service Officer to assist
MARQUETTE — American Legion Department Service Officer Lisa Clark will be in Marquette from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday at American Legion Post 44, 700 W. Bluff St.
She is available to assist all veterans and families of veterans with claim preparation, presentation, counsel and appeal counsel at no cost to the veterans. Anyone who believeshe/she may be eligible for VA compensation on health, education and/or employment issues, stop by Post 44 and see Clark.
Be aware that this visit may be canceled if the area is experiencing bad weather.
Democratic Socialists set to meet
MARQUETTE — The U.P. Democratic Socialists of America will hold its regular monthly meeting on Tuesday at the Peter White Public Library Lions Room in Marquette. The meeting will be from 7-9 p.m. and will address pressing local issues and how UPDSA can best advocate for the area’s working class.
