Flood assistance available

MARQUETTE –The members of the Copper Country community who have been affected by the devastation of the June 17 flood have relief assistance available.

The Upper Peninsula Association of REALTORS in conjunction with the Michigan REALTORS and the National Association of REALTORS received a grant through the REALTOR’ Relief Foundation for $50,000 for qualified applicants. This charitable foundation is dedicated to providing housing-related assistance to victims of disasters.

NAR first launched the REALTORS’ Relief Foundation as the REALTORS’ Relief Fund in 2001, within hours of the devastating Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, raising more than $8.4 million to provide assistance so that surviving family members could stay in their homes. Since then, more than $25 million has been raised for victims of disasters, including wildfires, tornadoes, floods, and hurricanes. Today, RRF exists as a 501(c)(3) organization established to provide housing-related assistance to victims of disasters and for other charitable purposes permitted under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

When major disaster strikes, the REALTORS’ Relief Foundation has one goal: help families who have endured unimaginable loss. The REALTORS’ Relief Foundation is currently coordinating efforts for relief for those affected by hurricanes/ floods and volcanic eruptions in Hawaii in the United States.

Assistance is available to qualified applicants towards one of the following options:

≤ Monthly mortgage expense for the primary residence that was damaged by the Houghton County Flood or;

≤ Rental cost due to displacement from the primary residence or rental relocation resulting from the Houghton County Flood.

Relief assistance is limited to a maximum of $1,000 per applicant per household. Deadline for application submission is Sept. 15. Note this assistance is for housing relief only; other expenses including second mortgages, vehicle purchase, rental, repair and or mileage are ineligible for reimbursement under this program.
