NARFE chapter to meet

MARQUETTE — Members of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association Chapter 1900 will hear a presentation by elder-law attorney Susan Wideman Schaible at their regular meeting at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.

NARFE will meet in Room B of the Marquette Senior Center, on the lower level of City Hall, 300 W. Baraga Ave. in Marquette. Members may enter from Spring Street, behind City Hall. Spring Street is one-way from east to west.

NARFE Chapter 1900 includes members from the Marquette, Escanaba, Rapid River, Ontonagon, Houghton and Hancock areas. For additional information, call 906-475-0362.

Summer Strings to perform

MARQUETTE — The Marquette Symphony Orchestra’s brand new Summer Strings group will be performing Wednesday as part of city of Marquette Art Week.

The free, family-friendly performance begins at 7 p.m. at the Marquette Commons. There will be some seating provided. Bring family and friends to the commons for a live, wide-ranging performance by 15 members of the Marquette Symphony Orchestra. The group will be playing classical favorites, classic rock hits, some jazz, fiddle tunes and a feature with Derrell Syria.

The MSO Summer Strings group will also be performing at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 18 at Ore Dock Brewing Company., with a special opening performance by the Superior String Alliance Chamber Players Summer Tour at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free, and donations are encouraged.

Elba Morse group getting together

MARQUETTE — The Elba Morse group will meet at Jeffery’s Restaurant for lunch at 11:30 a.m. Thursday.

All retired nurses are invited.

Federal bird act to be marked

HARVEY — The Chocolay Raptor Center birds are throwing a party from 2 to 4 p.m. July 1 at 146 Lakewood Lane, Harvey.

July 3 marks is the 100th anniversary of the effective date of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. The act implemented the Migratory Bird Treaty signed by the United States and Canada in 1916. Since then, all native migratory birds in the United States have been protected.

At the celebration, the center will offer cake, refreshments and appearances by all of its ambassador birds. The character of Marquette resident George Shiras III, who was instrumental in getting the Act passed, will be there to talk about his role in the environmental legislation.

J.D. Pierce Class of ’62 meeting

MARQUETTE — The Marquette John D. Pierce class of 1962 will meet at 2 p.m. July 1 at Big Boy Restaurant in Marquette for lunch.

Masons to provide child IDs

MARQUETTE — On July 4, the Marquette Masonic Lodge #101 will be providing a free child identification program. The event will be held between the hours of 3-6 p.m. at the Mattson Lower Harbor Park, which is located on Lakeshore Boulevard in Marquette. The program is being provided as a part of the Exchange Club’s International Food Fest.

Each child that goes through the Child ID process will receive a dental impression as well as a flash drive containing a photo, video, digital fingerprints and their vital information. Parents or legal guardians of children who participate must be present and fill out a permission slip for the child to receive this service. Children who have already received the service are encouraged to repeat the process every two years to keep the information in the completed packets current.

The Michigan Child Identification Program provides the family with everything needed for the Amber Alert System. Over ninety thousand Michigan children have received this valuable service. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children considers the Michigan Child Identification Program to be one of the most comprehensive of its kind.
