Iraq journey — Jim and Martha Hayward traveled to Iraq from mid-January to mid-February to participate in training in speaking English and some dental education to professionals and others in the religious and educational city of Najaf in southern Iraq. They experienced the people, their culture and historical sites while in Iraq. They will be doing a presentation of their travels at Immanuel Lutheran Church at 9:30 a.m. during the church’s coffee-time. Everyone is invited to come to see and hear what the Haywards experienced of the Iraqi people. The presentnation will be held in the Fellowship Hall at the church which is located along U.S. 41 and Baldwin Avenue in Negaunee.

Coder Dojo 906 — a community-based programming club for young people sponsored by the Northern Michigan University Seaborg Center, is offering coding classes from 4-6 p.m. this date. The sessions will take place in 2702 West Science. Coder Dojo 906 is a club that focuses on teaching young people ages 5-17 how to code develop websites, apps, programs and games. This series of classes is primarily aimed at kids 7 years old and older. Each class will provide activities for 5 and 6 year olds, but they must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Chili cookoff — The fourth annual Marquette Area Public Schools Camper Chili Cook-off is from 4:30-7 p.m. It’s a chance to sample four different chili recipes, one prepared by each of the elementary schools’ parent associations. Then the public in attendance can vote for his/her favorite chili while enjoying a silent auction, music, and games. It’s is a fundraiser between all four of MAPS elementary schools to help fifth-grade students attend the annual Outdoor Education Camp held at Bay Cliff Health Camp in Big Bay. One-hundred of the money raised will go to help offset costs of attending the camp. The cook-off is going to be in the Marquette Senior High School cafeteria, 1203 W. Fair Ave. in Marquette. Tickets are : $10 for adults; $5 for children; or $20 for a family. Tickets are available at any of the four elementary schools (Cherry Creek, Sandy Knoll, Graveraet, and Superior Hills) in the office. Tickets will also be sold at the door.

Storytime — There will be a new storytime at 4:30 p.m. at the Negaunee Public Library. This will be for children ages 5 years and older (younger siblings are welcome to attend), and will offer a variety of programs, including book samples, crafts, and occasional LEGO building sessions.

Tax help — Northern Michigan University’s Beta Alpha Psi will offer free income tax return assistance to students and community members. The program is offered from 5-7 p.m. in the University Center Trading Lab.

Lecture on faith — Northern Michigan University will host a free presentation by Daniel Mahoney, political science professor at College of the Holy Cross, titled “Lessons Learned: Recovering the Light of the Soul After the Totalitarian Scourge.” He will speak about reason, faith and political and religious freedom. The speech will be held at 6 p.m. in 1311 Jamrich Hall. It includes a discussion period after the lecture.

Tyrus — Northern Michigan University will present a feature-length documentary on the late Chinese American artist Tyrus Wong as part of its Diversity Common Reader Program. Wong overcame poverty and racism to become a renowned painter who exhibited with Picasso and Matisse, a Hollywood sketch artist and a “Disney Legend” for his groundbreaking work on the classic animated film, “Bambi.” He died at age 106 in 2016. “Tyrus” will be shown at 6:30 p.m. in room 165 of the Art and Design Building.
