SAYT puts on superb production of ‘Peter Pan’

By ELIISA GLADWELL

In Neverland, a little crowing is always appropriate, especially when you have something to crow about. And the Superior Arts Youth Theater certainly has something to crow about.

Under the superb direction of Jalina McClain, and her directing assistants Nathan Morgan and Teagen Sturmer, over 80 children aged 3-18 worked together onstage to create the magic of Broadway’s Timeless Musical — “Peter Pan.”

With a sprinkle of pixie dust, Peter Pan, Tinkerbell, Wendy, John and Michael Darling begin an unforgettable adventure. The children come face to face with a clock-swallowing crocodile, a fierce tribe of Warrior Girls, hilarious pirates, and of course the villainous Captain Hook.

The production is visually stunning, thanks to Steve McClain’s set design, Suzanne Shabazi’s costume design, and light design by Kim Hegmegee. Not only will it please your eye, but the vocal direction by Jeff Bruning accompanied by orchestration under the direction of Betsy Grugin is magic in itself.

Peter Pan is perfectly portrayed by Camden Larson. I can’t think of a better “break-out role” for Larson. His vocals, movements and mannerisms make the arrogant innocence of the boy who won’t grow up lovable and relatable. I am positive we will see more of this young man in the future.

If you don’t already believe in fairies, Carley Palomaki’s silent, but sweet performance as the fun and sassy Tinkerbell will have you convinced. Palomaki shines (figuratively and literally) in this role. Larson and Palomaki are the perfect pair and their chemistry throughout the production is very entertaining.

You are sure to fall in love with the Darlings. Mr. and Mrs. Darling (Isaac Lazenby and Caitlin Palomaki) do a nice job. Lazenby will have you laughing within the first 5 minutes of the production, and Palomaki’s beautiful voice is something to remember.

Wendy Darling is played by Amelia Bishop, who never disappoints. Her acting alone sets her apart from many her age, add her outstanding vocals and grace, and she is a treat to watch.

John and Michael Darling will melt your hearts. Jack Bishop (John) continuously catches your eye on stage with his expressions, and teddy-bear-toting Jack Johnson (Michael) steals the show.

Nicholas Conroy becomes the hilariously evil Captain Hook. His pompousness and bravado make him equally frightening and funny, and he sells his character with strong vocals.

Jill Grundstrom and Taylor Koski are a dream-team. Their choreography is clever and precise, especially when Tiger Lily (Kayla Grugin) and her tribe dance their way into the spotlight. Grugin’s confident portrayal of the fierce warrior is spot-on.

There is a saying “There are no small parts, just small actors”, which rings especially true for this production. The ensemble, made up of Lost Boys, Pirates, and Warrior Girls, is engaging. From the smallest of the lost boys, to my personal favorite, Nana the dog/Crocodile (Kendyl Dahlstrom), everyone on stage stays true to their characters and look to be enjoying themselves. No one looked to be having more fun than Larkyn Stucko, who plays Slightly, and continuously made me smile.

This cast can sing, dance, sword fight (thanks to Dakota Vogel), and they even fly! It was magical and breathtaking to see the Darling’s journey to Neverland. I highly recommend this production to those of all ages – even those who have grown up!

The Superior Arts Youth Theater’s production of “Peter Pan” plays at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. today and Sunday. Tickets cost $15 for adults and $9 for students and can be purchased at any EZ Ticket Outlet. There will be an additional $2 charge for tickets purchased at the door.
