Protests at NMU to be discussed
MARQUETTE — A presentation titled “Black Pride, Billy Clubs and Broken Promises: Northern Michigan University Student Protests” will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday in room 126 of NMU’s Learning Resources Center. The Central Upper Peninsula and NMU Archives is hosting this event in conjunction with Black History Month.
Marcus Robyns, professor and University archivist, will present about the student protests that occurred at NMU in the 1960s. NMU Archives student employee Kyleigh Sapp will present about the specific demands made by student organizations during the protests and how the NMU administration responded to those demands in the 1970s.

UPCM to host literacy night
MARQUETTE — A free Family Literacy Night at the Upper Peninsula Children’s Museum is set for Thursday.
The public is invited to join in for a night of reading and fun with the theme of Reading With Puppies.
The event is from 5:30-7:30 p.m. and there will be prizes, crafts, refreshments, free books, and more. This is a free event sponsored by the Literacy Legacy Fund of Michigan.
‘Milk’ to be screened at PWPL
MARQUETTE — The Peter White Public Library Invites film fans to a free screening of the 2008 modern classic “Milk” at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the library’s Community Room.
Using flashbacks and archival footing, this biographical drama follows Harvey Milk’s life as a gay rights activist from his 40th birthday until his death. Starring Sean Penn, Josh Brolin and Emile Hirsch, this movie is rated R and runs 2 hours 8 minutes. It won two Oscars: one for best original screen play and one for best actor in a leading role.

NAMI support group gathering
MARQUETTE — NAMI Alger/Marquette will be having a support group meeting from 7-9 p.m. Thursday at 129 W. Baraga Ave., Marquette.
NAMI meetings are open to individuals with a mental illness and family, friends etc. of such an individual. All of meetings are confidential.

Vasa Lodge members to meet
MARQUETTE — The monthly meeting of the Vasa Lodge of Marquette is at 7 p.m. Thursday at Messiah Lutheran Church, and will feature guest speaker Fred Anderson, who will give a talk and presentation about the sport of luge.
He will bring examples of luge sleds to show the audience. The program is free of charge and the public is invited to attend. The presentation will take place at 7:30.p.m. Refreshments will be served following the program.
