Sci-Fi on Tap at Ore Dock Aug. 16
MARQUETTE — At 7 p.m. Aug. 16, the Peter White Public Library will be hosting the third meeting of its new book club Sci-Fi on Tap at the Ore Dock Brewing Company in Marquette.
The final utopian novel of this summer, “Uglies” by Scott Westerfeld, published in 2005, explores creating a utopian society by making everyone both beautiful and the same: big eyes, full lips, perfect muscle to fat ratio.
Sixteen-year-old Tally Youngblood is on the cusp of undergoing the operation to become a pretty when she meets Shay. Unlike Tally, Shay doesn’t want to become a pretty, but plans on running away to live in the Smokes, a community outside this artificial utopia. Tally does not run away with Shay, but is forced to follow her by Special Circumstances who want to destroy the Smokes, where she learns that there is more to the operation than just making a person pretty.
The meeting will be in the Tap Room, so look for a PWPL sign and the book “Uglies.”
Come to the club, enjoy a beer, and express any thoughts on this novel. At the meeting, books for the fall will be chosen.
There is no admission charge to attend. For more information, visit www.pwpl.info or call 226-4318.
