‘Portraits of an American Sound’

MARQUETTE — DocuMonday presents a screening of the 2015 documentary “Country: Portraits of an American Sound” at 7 p.m. Monday, July 3 in the Peter White Public Library Community Room.

With Independence Day coming up, what better way to celebrate than viewing a film on country music, a uniquely American art form. In “Country: Portraits of an American Sound,” director Steven Kochones explores the 80-year history of this musical genre, examining the culture of both the music and the musicians through the photographic lens. More than a dozen country artists including Roseanne Cash, Merle Haggard and Keith Urban are featured with commentary from the men and women who photographed them.

The film runs for 1 hour 28 minutes.

There is no admission charge thanks to sponsorship by the Friends of the Peter White Public Library. For more information, visit www.pwpl.info or call 226-4318.

Touch of Finland to hold exhibit

MARQUETTE — Local store A Touch of Finland will hold its “Creation of the Bird” from 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, having been selected as one of several locations across the United States to display an art exhibit demonstrating the different stages of the creation of Finnish Toikka Birds from Iittala.

Toikka Birds are works of art, hand blown in Finland since 1972. Known for his Birds by Toikka collection of decorative glass objects for Iittala, Professor Oiva Toikka draws inspiration from nature and has created more than 500 award-winning birds.

During the exhibit, guests are welcome to sample free Finnish coffee and cardamom bread, and an Iittala representative will be on site to answer questions about the collection. Guests will receive a gift with each bird purchased as well as an entry for the drawing of a free bird.

In celebration of the event, Toikka created the Ruddy Duck, which will be available and is limited to 300 pieces. The Ruddy Duck is numbered and signed, and is available to retailers that have been chosen to host the Creation of the Bird event.

A Touch of Finland is located at 2853 U.S. 41 West, across from Kohl’s, in Marquette Township.
