Volunteer opportunities

Volunteer opportunities available for willing people of all ages in Marquette County. Persons 55 or older can learn about these and other possibilities in their community by contacting Julie Shaw at 315-2607 at the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program. Younger potential volunteers should contact the agencies directly.

Habitat for Humanity

Marquette County Habitat for Humanity is seeking volunteers to help build and repair homes in Marquette County. No experience necessary, just a willing spirit. Volunteers can register online at www.mqthabitat.org or call 906-228-3578.

Cancer Care of Marquette County

is currently looking for a volunteer to serve in a secretarial position. The duties include taking board meeting minutes and distributing to members online. Typically the group meets once or twice a year. The major role is in assisting the organization’s fundraising volunteers in planning and sponsoring the event via flyers, mailings, etc. Inquiries can be addressed to: Dave Poirier at 273-0045.

UP Health Systems Bell

Volunteers are needed in the Gift Shop, the Coffee Cart and as Patient Helpers. Contact Julie Solka, Coordinator of Volunteer Services, at 906-485-2751 or at julie.solka@bellmi.org.

Salvation Army

The Salvation Army in Marquette is looking for volunteers to answer phones and to help guide clients through its pantry. Volunteers are currently needed Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday afternoons and Thursday mornings. Call 906-226-2241.

Care Clinic

The Care Clinic is a pregnancy services center. One of Care Clinic’s free services, that provides a large of amount of encouragement to women who are newly pregnant, is its onsite ultrasound capability. Volunteer ultra-sonographers play a crucial role in Care Clinic’s ability to carry out ultrasounds. There currently is a pressing need for more volunteer Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographers. UP Home Health and Hospice

It is the little things we do that make the biggest impact in the lives of others. As a volunteer with U.P. Home Health & Hospice, a person will be able to leave lasting impressions on hospice patients, their family and caregivers. Build skills or share talents with hospice patients in a variety of volunteer opportunities and the life changed just may be the volunteers. U.P. Home Health & Hospice continues to exceed standards with chart-topping clinical quality reports while growing its volunteer team. Hospice volunteers are a special group of individuals who provide service, companionship and friendship to patients through a variety of activities, and respite to caregivers. Activities with patients may include helping with life reviews, memoirs, reading or listening to music together, preparing light meals, running errands, veteran-to-veteran interaction, writing letters or making bereavement phone calls. Volunteers visit patients in private homes and residential care facilities. UPHHH provides free training, flexibility, ongoing support and education to ensure all volunteers are comfortable working directly with patients and their loved ones and it is essential for the volunteer to understand that they are part of the Hospice Team. YMCA

The YMCA’s Reach and Rise program is looking for a volunteer to help 3-4 hours a week; filing, preparing paperwork and other office duties. Volunteers should contact Melissa DeMarse, Reach and Rise Director at 227-9622

The YMCA also is looking for chaperones for the March 17 Middle School Dance which is scheduled from 7:45-10:30 p.m. Volunteers chaperons are crucial to create a safe and fun environment for middle schoolers attending the Y Dance. Moosewood Nature Center

Adult Day Services

Lake Superior Adult Day Services is looking for someone with gardening experience and familiarity in working with people with memory loss to help participants plant, grow and garden. Beginning ASAP. For more information, call 226-2142 or check out the program on Facebook.

Beacon House

Hospitality Gifts is looking for volunteer cashiers (contact Pat Wolff at 225-3278) and Beacon House and the Hospitality Rooms could use Kitchen Greeters (contact Margaret Parker at 225-7100).

UPAWS

Do you knit or are you crafty? Please consider volunteering for the “Snuggles Project” for the Upper Peninsula Animal Welfare Shelter homeless cats and kittens. “Snuggle Blankets” make their stay at the shelter much cozier and then the blanket can go with them to their new home.

The Snuggles Project encourages donations of yarn and support of volunteers to knit small snuggle blankets for the cats, kittens and small dogs at UPAWS.

Girl Scouts

Girl Scouting depends on volunteer leaders who offer their time and talent to give girls K-12 the opportunities this program offers. The New Free Store

The New Free Store, 1420 M-28 East, Marquette, needs volunteers to sort donations, display donations, repackage some items, serve light refreshments and help shoppers find what they need. This is a non-profit organization serving mainly low income and homeless families. It has no income guidelines so anyone in need of help can go to the store and shop for free. The New Free Store gives away good quality used clothing, linens, personal hygiene items and cleaning supplies. Anyone with questions can call 362-FREE or email marcar@chartermi.net.

Room at the Inn Warming Center

Volunteers are needed to prepare and serve breakfast and/or lunch to the homeless/needy. The Warming Center is located at 447 W. Washington St. Marquette. Breakfast shift is 7:30-10 a.m. Lunch shift is 10 a.m.- 12:30 p.m. Meals are served seven days per week. Great need for volunteers on Saturdays. Volunteers are welcome to schedule a trial visit to determine if this experience is something they would like. Most people find this a rewarding experience. Volunteers should be reliable and compassionate. For additional information or to schedule a visit, contact Greg at 225-1521. He is available mornings Monday-Friday.

Lake Superior Hospice

Lake Superior Hospice, an independent non-profit organization, invites people to join its award-winning group of devoted and dependable volunteers. As a volunteer for Lake Superior Hospice, a person is a member of a dedicated team of professionals that provides quality care to patients and their families, with care, compassion and commitment. By showing up and being fully present to others, volunteers make the community a better place to live. LSH strives to match a volunteer’s personal interests, talents and comfort level with the needs of the organization, its patients, families, and community. LSH currently has a need for volunteers to provide friendly visits, caregiver support, veteran-to-veteran activities, spiritual support, and office assistance. Community Action Alger Marquette

Formerly known as AMCAB, CAAM is currently looking for volunteers at the Forsyth Township Senior Center to help with the senior lunches. Volunteers are needed on Monday and/or Tuesday. Please consider volunteering for this rewarding experience.

Life Tracker

RSVP of Marquette County — The Life Tracker program is in need of volunteers in the Ishpeming, Negaunee, Gwinn and Chocolay areas. The Life Tracker program is a lifesaving project combining compassion, technology and security to caregivers and their families — for those who may wander, including Alzheimer’s, autistic and traumatic brain injuries. Marquette Regional History Center

The Marquette Regional History Center is currently looking for someone to volunteer in its gift shop, which would be managing traffic, answering the phone, and sales of tickets and merchandise. They are looking for someone who can commit to one day a week for 4-6 hours. RSVP Non-Emergency Medical Transportation Program

Help is needed: Those age 55 or better who have a good driving record and have a few hours to spare each week or each month are asked to consider becoming an RSVP Transporter.

Transporters provide frail and/or isolated seniors age 60 and older living in Marquette County with a free ride to their non-emergency medical appointments within Marquette County. Many seniors in the area do not have family or friends available to help them. As an RSVP Transporter, the volunteer helps these seniors access much-needed medical care. Volunteer Benefits: training opportunities, mileage reimbursement, and making a positive difference in the life of a neighbor in need. Area in most need is Marquette.

The American Cancer Resource Center

Located in Suite 110 at the Peninsula Medical Center in Marquette is in need of volunteers. This is a volunteer group. The volunteers help cancer patients newly diagnosed, and undergoing treatment, both oncology and radiation. The center offers a wide source of literature and “free” health managers (with their specific type of cancer.) Anyone who has time to volunteer is asked to call Claire at 225-3507 on Tuesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Leave a message if no one answers.
