Legion distributing poppies
MARQUETTE — Thursday through Saturday, American Legion Auxiliary volunteers from Unit 44 in Marquette will be distributing the familiar red handcrafted poppies honoring America’s war dead.
Each poppy has been made by a veteran at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette as a supplement to the physical therapy program. The veterans who make the poppies are paid a small amount for each painstakingly made flower. For some, it is his or her only source of income.
All proceeds collected by the volunteers are contributed to programs for the rehabilitation and welfare programs of needy veterans and their families.
The American Legion Auxiliary asks people to wear a poppy and honor every American who has died for the ideals of freedom, justice and equality.
