Presentation on drugs planned

MARQUETTE — Forensic scientist Zach Blaksmith and addiction medicine physican Dr. John Lehtinen will present “Drugs: More Dangerous Than You Think” at Northern Michigan University.

Their talk begins at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Jamrich Hall Auditorium. A question-and-answer session will follow. The NMU Forensic Biochemistry Club is sponsoring the event, which is free and open to the public.

Blaksmith will present “What’s in Your Drugs?” He will talk about his experience analyzing confiscated drugs and how those drugs can be laced with other dangerous substances. Lehtinen, the only board-certified addiction medicine physician in the Upper Peninsula, will present “The Addicted Brain.”

Blaksmith works in the controlled substance and toxicology units at the Michigan State Police Crime Lab in Marquette. He is also a member of the Crime Scene Response Team, responding to major crime scenes across the Upper Peninsula. He is a firefighter and EMT in Sands Township, where he has been working and volunteering in emergency medical services for 14 years.

Lehtinen practices addiction medicine, sports medicine and occupational medicine at UP Health System Marquette. He has been practicing in Marquette for more than 36 years. He is the team physician for NMU and is a volunteer assistant coach for NMU’s hockey team.

Agriculture conference set

ESCANABA — Michigan State University Extension is hosting the 11th annual Agriculture for Tomorrow conference on March 7, to help Upper Peninsula farmers stay informed, up-to-date and profitable.

Topics will include protecting crops from weeds, disease and insects, low-lignin alfalfa, using paper mill residuals on crop land, managing crop nutrients, dairy calf housing, passive immune testing calves, beef cattle handling, Veterinary Feed Directive, Military Veterans in Ag, Panel of farmers on Brand and Direct Marketing, Meet MDARD, and Getting to know local resources. Participants can gain information on farming practices they are currently pursuing, or explore new possibilities.

MSU Extension U.P. crop production educator Jim Isleib said in a news release: “This conference is a local, low-cost opportunity for farmers of all kinds and sizes to get together and learn. It’s a great day off the farm toward the end of a long U.P. winter.”

Agriculture for Tomorrow will be held on March 7, at Bay College, Heirman University Center, 2001 N. Lincoln Road, Escanaba. The early registration cost is $25 before Feb. 24, or $35 after that date, and includes lunch and materials.
