New at Peter White Public Library

We have quite a few new non-fiction books on the new non-fiction shelves next to the circulation desk. Here is a listing of some of them. I hope you find something that is of interest to you.

“The Red Bandanna: a life, a choice, a legacy” By Tom Rinaldi. What would you do in the last hour of your life? This book tells of Welles Crowther, whose actions on 9/11 offer a lasting lesson about character, calling and courage. This book is of a fearless choice, about a crucible of terror and the indomitable spirit to answer it.

“Swimming In The Sink; an episode of the heart” By Lynne Cox. This book is about an elite athlete who broke many world records, among them swimming the English Channel at 15, being the first woman to swim across Cook Strait, and being the first to swim off Antarctica in 32-degree water. This story starts at the laboratory at the University of London. Cox put her heart into everything she’d ever accomplished. She took care of her elderly parents, both of whom passed away one after the other, then the death of a beloved pet, and then being diagnosed with atrial fibrillation. This book is a writing about her journey back toward health, and slowly moving toward the one aspect of her life that meant everything to her, back to open waters.

“In Such Good Company” By Carol Burnett. This book pulls back the curtain on her winning show that made entertainment history. She tells little-known stories of the guests, sketches, and improvisations that made The Carol Burnett Show legendary. Putting the spotlight on everyone from her costars to the impressive list of guest stars, Carol crafts a lively portrait of the talent and creativity that went into every episode. This book is Carol’s love letter to a golden era in television history through the lens of her brilliant show. Get the best seat in the house for “eleven years of laughter, mayhem, and fun in the sandbox.”

“The Girl With The Lower Back Tattoo”By Amy Schumer. This book is about the Emmy Award-winning comedian, actress, writer, and star that has taken the entertainment world by storm. Amy mines her past for stories about her teenage years, her family, relationships, and shares the experiences that have shaped who she is, a woman with the courage to bare her soul and stand up for what she believes in, all while making us laugh.

“Born To Run” By Bruce Springsteen. In 2009, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band performed at the Super Bowl’s halftime show. The experience was so exhilarating that Bruce decided to write about it. That’s how this autobiography began. Over the past several years, Bruce has devoted himself to writing the story of his life. He describes growing up in New Jersey, seeing Elvis Presley’s debut on “The Ed Sullivan Show,” his drive to become a musician, the rise of the E Street Band, his struggles that inspired his best work and much more. This book is for workers, dreamers, parents and children, lovers and loners, artists, freaks or anyone who has ever wanted to be baptized in the holy river of rock’n’roll.

“Juniper, The girl who was born too soon” By Kelley and Thomas French. Juniper French was born four months early. She weighed one pound, four ounces, and her body was the length of a Barbie doll. Babies like Juniper trigger the question: Which is the greatest act of love, to save her, or to let her go? Her parents chose to fight for her life and this book is their incredible tale. This book traces the journey of this family from its fragile beginning to the miraculous survival of their now thriving daughter.

“Dying To Wake Up, a doctor’s voyage into the afterlife and the wisdom he brought back” By Rajiv Parti, MD. When Dr. Parti had his near-death experience on the operating table, he first watched his own operation from the ceiling, even later recalling a joke told by the doctors during the surgery. He was greeted by archangels and his deceased father, who led him through the torments of hell and revealed the toxic cycle of violence that had plagued their family for generations. He also reviewed struggles of his previous lives, which in many ways, reflected those he still faced in the present. Finally he experienced heaven. He learned lessons of spiritual health from angels which he was told to bring down to earth, but to do so, Dr. Parti had to change his ways. He woke a new man, and this book is the remarkable true story of spiritual transformation.
