Holiday shopping at farmers market now in full swing

MARQUETTE — With just three weeks left in its operating season, time is running out to shop for local goods available at the Downtown Marquette Farmers Market.

“The vendors are very excited to be at the market through Dec. 17 to provide shoppers with high quality, locally grown and produced food and artisan wares,” said Myra Zyburt, manager of the farmers market.

During the next few weeks, 18 farmers, four food producers and 17 artisans will rotate through the market, offering a variety of handmade crafts and local foods and produce.

“The market has fabulous meat and vegetables for your meals, eggs and coffee for breakfasts,” Zyburt explained.

If you miss your morning “cup of joe” on Saturday, stop in to see vendor U.P. North Roast for some fresh brewed coffee sold by the cup. The Escanaba-based business also offers fresh roasted coffee beans and roasted, glazed almonds and pecans sold by the bag.

“When you are doing your holiday baking, shop at the market for maple syrup, honey and locally produced baking chocolate,” Zyburt said.

“Need an already prepared dessert?” she added. “(Then) shop at For Goodness Cakes! for a selection of delicious cakes.”

For Goodness Cakes! began as a support business to Trenary Loam-Grown, a farm offering Brussels sprouts, fruits and other vegetables, according to owner Kathleen Heinonen.

Heinonen said she has tried to offer unique bakery that is also inviting for consumers by making fresh cakes that are smaller in size — something which, she says, would be a perfect addition to a luncheon, coffee with friends or as a gift to a neighbor. For this market season, she’s also added streusel coffee cakes with fillings made from berries she’s grown or picked, and others made from scratch, such as lemon curd.

The Downtown Marquette Farmers Market also offers plenty of stocking stuffers, unique gift items and cold weather clothing options, as well as holiday decorations including Christmas trees and wreaths.

Zyburt reminded shoppers that in addition to credit and debit cards, the market accepts Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits, or SNAP benefits, and matches up to $20 per day through its Double UP Food Bucks program.

“Keep $60 on your MI Bridge Card for December food shopping … and when you use it at the market during the next three weeks, you will receive $120 worth of food,” she said.

The Downtown Marquette Farmers Market will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Marquette Commons, located at 112 S. Third St.
