‘Invictus’ screening held Thursday

MARQUETTE — Film fans are invited to the Peter White Public Library at a free screening of the modern classic film “Invictus” at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the library’s Community Room.

Released in 2009, this inspiring biographical sports drama stars Morgan Freeman as Nelson Mandela, the new South African President, as he initiates a unique venture to unite the apartheid-torn land by enlisting the national rugby team on a mission to win the 1995 World Cup.

Matt Damon costars as Francois Pienaar, the captain of the South Africa rugby union team, the Springboks. The story is based on the John Carlin book “Playing the Enemy: Nelson Mandela and the Game That Made a Nation.”

“Invictus” received nominations for two Academy Awards and for three Golden Globe Awards including Best Actor for Freeman, Best Supporting Actor for Damon and Best Director for Clint Eastwood.

The film is rated PG-13 and runs for 134 minutes. Light refreshments will be served.

Kids’ Christmas Party at Gwinn VFW

GWINN — Gwinn VFW Post 5670 and Auxiliary will host their annual Kids’ Christmas Party from 1-3 p.m. Saturday at the VFW clubrooms.

Hot dogs, games and prizes will be featured.

Santa will arrive at 2 p.m.

Champion Twp. Christmas Party

CHAMPION — The Annual Champion Township Christmas Party with Santa and Horse Drawn Sleigh rides will be from 1-3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 18 at the Champion Fire Hall.

Refreshments will be served. Additionally, Arsenault Family Pony Pulling Team will be announcing the winners of their Best Champion Christmas Light Display contest. Everyone is welcome.

Rock Lions breakfast buffet Dec. 18

ROCK– The Rock Lions monthly Third Sunday, all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 18 at the Rock Lions Club along M-35 in Rock.

The buffet includes eggs prepared to order and omelets, bacon, sausage, ham, hash brown potatoes, biscuits and sausage gravy, pancakes, French toast, English muffins, cereal, a variety of fruits, lots of dessert items, and coffee, tea, milk and juice. The charge is adults $8, ages 6 – 12, $5, ages 5 and under eat free.

The monthly breakfast is held at the Rock Lions Clubhouse. The facility is available for rent by calling Jerry at 356-6475.

The Rock Lions Club is a non-profit service organization that provides funding for charitable organizations and local needs.

Legion service officer at Post 44

MARQUETTE — American Legion Department Service Officer Theresa Casteel will be at Post 44 in Marquette from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 20.

Post 44 is located at 700 W. Bluff St.

Casteel is there to assist veterans or family members with claim preparation, presentation and appeal counsel. She is available to assist all veterans at no cost to them.

Christmas dinner at Elks Lodge

ISHPEMING — A Community Christmas Dinner is planned from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Christmas Day at the Ishpeming Elks Lodge.

Meal to include traditional holiday favorites like turkey, ham, stuffing, cranberry sauce, potatoes, gravy and dessert.

This free meal is provided by the community and is open to the entire community.

People are encouraged to make a reservation by calling 486-8690 between 3-9 p.m. Monday-Saturday.

Take out and free delivery are available in western Marquette County, including Palmer. For those choices, RSVP to 486-6890, which is also the number to call to volunteer to help with the meal.
