Support for reading program sought

MARQUETTE — The Marquette-Alger Reading Council is seeking support for its annual Gift of Reading project.

The goal of the project is to promote an interest in reading by providing books for children, teens and adults. Since the project began in 1988, more than 30,000 books have been donated by the community and given to families and adults at Christmas and throughout the year.

MARC also distributes these books to Child and Family Services, Marquette County Health Department, Harbor House and other Marquette and Alger social service organizations.

Community members wishing to help can donate a new book at schools and libraries in the two-county area and Snowbound Books in Marquette. Monetary donations can be made by sending a check to MARC-Gift of Reading at P.O. Box 1084, Marquette, MI 49855. Donations for the Gift of Reading will be accepted through Dec. 21.

ASPCA grant to benefit UPAWS

MARQUETTE — The Upper Peninsula Animal Welfare Shelter has announced that it received a grant from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, more commonly known as the ASPCA.

The $2,000 grant was awarded through the ASPCA and Subaru Share the Love Shelter-Dealership program. UPAWS and Fox Subaru will collaborate and organize a one-day public adoption event. All adoption fees for this event will be waived.

“UPAWS takes in and cares for nearly 1,500 companion animals a year, and all of these animals are evaluated and readied for adoption into loving community homes. Events like the “Share the Love” Adoption Event are extremely helpful in helping us do just that,” said Ann Brownell, UPAWS Community Outreach coordinator.

The UPAWS “Share the Love” Adoption Event will take place from 2 to 6 p.m. Dec. 14 at FOX Marquette Subaru at 3815 U.S 41 West, Marquette.

UPAWS and FOX Subaru invites the public to stop by to spend some time with the dogs, cats, and small critters that are available for adoption.

UPAWS will be bringing animals that need homes to Fox Subaru Marquette. People interested in adopting a pet must stop by Fox Subaru Marquette to see the animals there and obtain an “Adoption Voucher.”

The animals at the shelter, and in foster care included too, but interested parties must stop at FOX Subaru Marquette first to obtain a voucher. No exceptions.
