‘Becoming Animal’ book discussion

MARQUETTE — The Transition Marquette County Reading Group will meet to discuss the book “Becoming Animal” by David Abram at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Conference Room at Peter White Public Library in Marquette.

Abram, a cultural ecologist, philosopher, visionary, and slight of hand magician, encourages us to take a new look at the world we not only live in but are a part of. He suggests we have allowed technology, from simple language to advanced electronics, to create a disconnect between our selves and the rest of the animate world. Questioning the distinction between matter and spirit, he invites us to think of “our sensible surroundings (even rocks, even houses!) as sensitive and even sentient.” Humans, he seems to say, are not so much distinct bodies as locations in the world.

While anyone is invited to be a part of the discussion, it would help to have at least started to read the book. For more information call Charlie at 226-3314 or email mqtchaz@gmail.com.
