PWPL offering NMU study time

MARQUETTE — Peter White Public Library is offering Northern Michigan University students exam study special hours from 9 p.m-1 a.m. Monday and Tuesday.

Students must present a valid NMU ID for entry. Free coffee and snacks available while they last. Printing is available for 15 cents per black and white copy and 75 cents per color sheet.

Quiet study will be on the first floor, silent study on the second floor. Those attending are asked to use parking lot entrance. This activity is free.

FFN taking scholarship applications

MARQUETTE — Finlandia Foundation National, the premier network of Finnish-American organizations in the U.S., is now accepting applications for its 2017 scholarships.

Full-time undergraduate (sophomore or higher) students and graduate students at accredited post-secondary institutions in the U.S. or Finland are eligible to apply for scholarships. The recipients in 2016 included American, Finnish and dual citizen Finnish-Americans pursing a range of studies. Applicants of Finnish-American heritage and/or studying subjects related to Finnish culture receive special consideration. FFN also offers the P.J.C. Lindfors Legal Scholarship for American and Finnish law students. Guidelines and the applications are available at FinlandiaFoundation.org.

Peter White book club to meet

MARQUETTE — The Peter White Library Book Group will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 6 in the Dandelion Cottage Room at the library to discuss “Stoned: Jewelry, Obsession, and How Desire Shapes the World” by Aja Raden.

Raden’s account of how eight jewels shaped the course of history shares insights into the role of precious gemstones in triggering cultural movements, political dynasties, and wars, while exploring how jewels reflect the darker aspects of human nature. Saari to address Finnish gathering

ISHPEMING — Tuesday is Finland’s 99th Independence Day and the League of Finnish-Ameerican Societies U.P. Chapter Finlandia Foundation National Affiliate is holding a celebration at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Bethel Lutheran Church, 333 E. Ridge St., in Ishpeming.

Dr. Jon Saari, NMU history professor emeritus, will be speaking about his recent trip to Washington, D.C., for the FFN Joint Chapter Meeting where Finland’s 2017 Centennial Year was a major topic of lively discussion. Thirty-four of the 52 affiliate chapters were represented at the JCM in early November. In addition, the annual “Pikkujoulu” or Little Christmas will be included in the Tuesday celebration, with reminiscing about Christmas customs in Finland and in Finnish America, and singing of Finnish Christmas carols, accompanied by Tanja Stanaway on her accordion.

Janet Wissuri will have her baked goods for sale at the meeting, and Tanja Stanaway will offer a selection of Christmas items from her Heart to Finland collection.

There will be ample time for visiting over coffee and refreshments. This is also a time to start or renew membership in the League of Finnish-American Societies U.P. Chapter.
