Police find body in Lake Superior near Au Train Island
Au TRAIN — A body was found this afternoon near the site of a boating accident that occurred Sunday evening in Lake Superior near Au Train Island.
Police did not release the identity of the person, who was discovered by the Alger County dive team, according to a news release from by Michigan State Police.
Police said large waves on Lake Superior Sunday caused the seven occupants of a pontoon boat to fall overboard near the south side of Au Train Island.
Six of the occupants were rescued and treated for hypothermia, police said, but the seventh went swimming toward the boat. The boat was later recovered, but the final occupant had been missing.
State troopers at the Munising detachment received a report of the boating accident around 6 p.m. Sunday, according to police.
The investigation is currently ongoing.
Assisting agencies include the Alger County Sheriff’s Department, Pictured Rocks National Park Marine Patrol and the U.S. Coast Guard.
Police were not releasing any other information at this time.
