L’Anse names new board member

L’ANSE – Carrie Meyer is the new superintendent and Melissa Scroggs is the new Junior/Senior High School principal at L’Anse Area Schools, as of July 1, and now the district’s Board of Education will have a new face as well.

The board interviewed two candidates Monday, Ken Summers and Mandy Lambert, for the board position vacated by Patricia Loosemore, and nominated and approved Summers to fill the spot.

Summers, who was named 2012 Distinguished Alumni at LAS, recently moved back to the area, and he and his wife, Bridget, own The Mercantile Exchange Inc. on 1 North Main Street, the former home of L’Anse Hardware.

“Both would have been excellent board members. Both had very responsible answers to the questions,” Meyer said in a phone interview Tuesday. “… (Summers) will be joining the board after he does his oath of office.”

He’ll be present at the August board meeting, and his partial term will end on Dec. 31, 2014. The position will be on the November 2014 ballot. Summers is also filling a partial term on the L’Anse village council after John VanDusen went on military leave.

Also Monday, the board approved one-year contract addendums and 1.5 percent raises for Laura Mathieu as business manager, Tom Sprague as elementary principal and John Juntunen as maintenance-custodial-transportation supervisor. Meyer’s contract was also amended to have the same type of insurance as others, with higher deductibles and co-pays.

In public comment period the board heard concern from a parent about the elimination of a bus run, which will likely require some parents to drive their children to bus stops. Board President Jason Ayres noted using two buses was inefficient to the rural area, and the reduction of bus routes will save the district close to $70,000.
