MARQUETTE — Since its doors opened in June 2015, Java Bay of Marquette has been a popular destination for people looking for speciality coffee drinks or sandwiches. But about a month ago, the locally owned business at 1102 N. Third St. expanded its menu, adding a variety of burgers because, according to co-owner Bob Dudo, sometimes you just crave a burger.

“This summer will mark our third year being open in Marquette and it seems like the three-year mark determines if you’re going to stick around,” Dudo said.

For seven years, Dudo and his wife, Nikki, have owned Java by the Bay in L’Anse. He said the couple wanted to open another business that was a little more centrally located in the Upper Peninsula.

Although the menus at both locations are similar, the burgers are only served at the Marquette location, Dudo said.

“We get a lot of people that come in asking about our burgers,” he said. “They’ve been going over really well with people.”

Java Bay’s burger menu includes a sauteed mushroom burger covered with swiss cheese; a burger with blackened seasoning, crispy bacon and melted bleu cheese; a bacon and cheddar cheese burger; a California burger that has guacamole, pepper jack cheese and pickled jalapeno; the Cuban burger, which includes smoked ham, pickles, mustard and melted swiss; and an out west burger that has bacon, avocado, barbecue sauce and crispy onions on it.

All burgers come with lettuce, tomato, mayo, along with a side of american fries for $9.

Java Bay is open for breakfast and lunch, with both dine-in and takeout options available.

Aside from the new burger selection, a wide variety of breakfast items, deli sandwiches, hot grilled sandwiches, fresh fruit smoothies and coffee drinks, including their popular ghost pepper mocha, are offered.

Dudo said the breakfast burrito is by far the best-selling item on the menu.

“The breakfast burrito is seriously where half of our sales come from,” he said.

The popular menu item is a hearty meal that has eggs, sausage, black beans, cheddar cheese, hash browns and salsa, all wrapped in a flour tortilla that’s grilled until golden brown. Customers have the option to add avocado for $1 or sour cream for 50 cents more.

Even though coffee shops are rapidly popping up around the Marquette area, Java Bay, with its considerably sized menu featuring a variety of items, has plenty to keep customers coming back for more.

“We get a lot of repeat customers who will get the same thing until they get tired of it,” Dudo said. “We’re not really a coffee shop or cafe — we’re kind of a small restaurant, but we’ve always enjoyed the coffee-type atmosphere … We just grew from there.”

Java Bay features daily specials that are posted on the business’s Facebook page.

The hours of operation are 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
