Students learn hands-on at NMU’s Jacobetti Center

MARQUETTE — Students of Republic-Michigamme High School traveled to Northern Michigan University’s Jacobetti Center with Industrial Arts teacher Matt Barbercheck to learn about materials testing procedures prevalent in engineering and technology fields. The goal of the field trip was to show the kids that what they are learning in the classroom is applicable and important in the real world. Students performed hardness tests on pieces of steel to find their their Brinell hardness number after using hardening and quenching techniques on the steel.
