MARQUETTE — Brenda Reynolds heard through the grapevine the Gwinn Area Public Schools sports program was in need of some financial help.

Since the Gwinn Inn — the bar she owns with her husband, Paul — in the past few years has helped put on a September benefit to raise funds for the Forsyth Township fire department or the township’s EMTs, she knew she could help.

“I heard the sports budget might get cut, so I thought we’d do an all-day band jam, so the kids wouldn’t lose their sports,” Reynolds said. “I brought the idea to a friend on the Gwinn All-Sports Booster Club and they liked the idea.”

That was the beginning of planning for the Gwinn All-Sports Booster Benefit which will take place Saturday at the Gwinn Inn.

“We started planning maybe in December,” Reynolds said. “I talked to Bob Libick of Spun, who is from Gwinn, and the guys from Stranded, who host the September jam, and they said that we could do this.”

Around 4 p.m., the bucket raffle will begin, with the music starting at 5:45 p.m. and continuing until 2 a.m. (see accompanying box).

“Anyone is welcome to come until 10 p.m., then that’s the time we’ll switch to 21-plus,” she said. “Early in the event, some of the athletes will be there will be there to help with the ticket sales for the basket raffle.”

In addition to the bucket raffle will be 50/50 drawings.

“We’re still accepting donations for prizes and bucket raffle items,” Reynolds said. “And of course, we’re happy to accept monetary donations in advance, too. Checks can be made out to the Gwinn All-Sports Booster Club.

“The more money we raise, the better.”

The September band jam raises between $3,000 and $4,000 each year. Reynolds said organizers hope to better that total, to offer as much support as possible to the district’s athletic program.

Donations can be dropped off at the Gwinn Inn, 170 W. Flint St., Gwinn.
