A Souper event

Soup dinner — set for Dec. 3 — to benefit JJ Packs

MARQUETTE — Members of the Marquette Unitarian Universalist Congregation are preparing to host their 12th annual soup dinner, an event that will benefit Marquette Area Public Schools’ JJ Packs program.

“It’s a free dinner. Everybody in the community is invited and they will get a choice of lots of … different kinds of soups and breads and desserts,” said G.G. Gordon, a member of the congregation.

The soup dinner will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. Dec. 3 at the Marquette Unitarian Universalist Congregation, located west of Harvey at 1510 M-28 East.

Donations raised during the event will go toward JJ Packs, a program that sends home healthy food packs every weekend to elementary school students in need.

Gordon said the soup dinner had been used in the past to benefit the nonprofit Heifer International, which aims to end hunger and poverty throughout the world, but the change was made last year to raise funds for the local program JJ Packs.

Gordon said the dinner has brought in roughly 100 people at past events, raising $1,000 to $2,000 per year.

“Soups are made by all the members of congregation,” Gordon said. “Many people make two or three different kinds, so there’s lots of choices, and the children from the congregation do all the work,” such as setting tables, serving beverages and helping with clean up.

As the congregation follows an ideal of universal acceptance, Gordon said everyone is welcome to the soup dinner, or other events held there.

“We are a liberal faith, we welcome anybody,” Gordon said. “We believe in the inherent worth and dignity of all individuals and we value the interdependent web of all life on Earth. We are socially progressive and active, and we are committed to bending the moral arch of the universe towards justice. We believe in everyone’s right to find their own spiritual path and we respect that and support that, and we draw inspiration from all of the major religions of the world.”
