Marquette Co-Op-sponsored farm tours to continue in August, September

MARQUETTE — The annual local farm tours sponsored by the Marquette Food Co-op will continue Aug. 20 and Sept. 17.

The Aug. 20 tours include GrandBee’s Apiary in Pelkie, the MSU North Farm in Chatham, Reh-Morr Farm in Eben Junction and Treasa’s Treasures in Munising.

The September tours include Hannah’s Garden in Marquette, Seeds & Spores Family Farm in Marquette, BSB Farm in Skandia and Superior Angus in Rapid River.

For 12 years, the Marquette Food Co-op has been coordinating tours with their local venders to create the local farms that offer everyone the opportunity to connect with local food.

In that time, the food landscape in the Upper Peninsula has changed to reflect an increasing interest in supporting local economies, the growth of farmers markets and more people focused on the connections between food, health and healthy communities.

The tours are free and run continuously from noon to 5 p.m. Organizers recommend being prepared for any weather as the tours will go on rain or shine.

Elise Bunce, who grows herbs and plant starts at Rock River Perennial Garden, has been on the tours since the first year. She said: “People come all the way out to see us. People want to know, they want to learn and they really care.”
